A case study of changes in economic performance of an irrigated dairy farm in northern Victoria AgEcon
Ho, Christie K.M.; Malcolm, Bill; Armstrong, Dan P.; Doyle, Peter T..
Average total factor productivity measures for the dairy industry provide an insight into how the industry is performing as a whole, but reveal little about what may be happening on individual farms. A case study of an irrigated dairy farm in northern Victoria, over a 37-year period, found that total milk production and some measures of partial productivity increased substantially. The economic performance of this case study farm over the 37-year period is described and analysed. From records of income and expenses, operating profit, returns to capital, labour and management and total productivity measures were calculated. Between 1980 and 2000, the business achieved productivity gains at higher than the rate estimated for the whole industry. This...

A Game Theoretic Framework for Cooperative Benefits in South Africa’s Land Redistribution Process: A Case of Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal Sugarcane Farmland Transfers AgEcon
Mbatha, C. Nhlanhla; Antrobus, G.G..
A good indicator of successful farm redistribution cases has to be the continuation of viable productivity rates in their post transfer periods. Continued productivity benefits all the stakeholders that are involved in the process. Unfortunately negative productivity levels have been reported in numerous South African land redistribution transfers in recent years. A game theoretic perspective is adopted to argue that cooperation among key stakeholders, which could be enforced through long term contracts between a land buyer, sellers and new owners, would lead to higher productivity levels and other benefits. Additional benefits would, for example, include market related prices paid by a buyer. Sugarcane farm transfer cases from two municipality districts...

A KÜLFÖLDI TŐKE SZEREPE ÉS A GAZDÁLKODÁS EREDMÉNYESSÉ-GÉRE GYAKOROLT HATÁSA AZ ÉLELMISZERIPARBAN AgEcon
Hodina, Peter; Lamfalusi, Ibolya.
A kilencvenes évtized első éveiben a külföldi tőkebefektetés egyik kiemelt cél-pontja az élelmiszeripar volt. A rendkívül gyors vállalat-felvásárlás és a megva-lósított tőkeemelés hatására 1993-ban a (vizsgált) élelmiszeripar összes jegyzett tőkéjének már 43 százaléka volt külföldi tulajdonban. Ez a részesedés 2000-re meghaladta a 60 százalékot. A dinamikusan növekvő tőkebefektetési tendencia 2000 után megtört, s azóta minden évben, kisebb-nagyobb mértékben mind a jegyzett tőke, mind pedig a külföldi tőke csökken az élelmiszeriparban. A 2000. évet megelőző időszakban az élelmiszeriparban jelentkező többletki-bocsátás teljes egészében a külföldi tőkét is működtető vállalkozásokhoz kapcso-lódott. A 2000. évben, illetve utána alapvető változás következett...

A produção de leite no Rio Grande do Sul: produtividade, especialização e concentração (1990 – 2009) AgEcon
Marion Filho, Pascoal Jose; Fagundes, Jones de Oliveira; Schumacher, Gabriela.
This article evaluates the evolution of productivity, specialization and concentration of milk production in microregions of Rio Grande do Sul in the period 1990 to 2009. Productivity is measured by the ratio between milk production and the number of cows milked, the specialization is calculated from the location quotient (QL) and concentration is determined by the location Gini (GL), according to the geographical division of microregions of IBGE. The survey results showed that increases productivity, specialization and concentration in milk production, with emphasis on microregions of Três Passos, with QL equal to 2,33 in 2008, and Passo Fundo, with productivity of 4.197 liters/cow in 2009. The location Gini also showed a significant growth in the period...

Access to Credit, Factor Allocation and Farm Productivity: Evidence From the CEE Transition Economies AgEcon
Ciaian, Pavel; Falkowski, Jan; Kancs, d'Artis.
This paper analyses how farm access to credit affects farm input allocation and farm efficiency in the CEE countries. Drawing on a unique farm level panel data with 37,409 observations and employing a matching estimator we are able to control for the key source of endogeneity – unoberserved heterogeneity. We find that farms are credit constrained both in the short-run as well as in the long-run, but that credit constraint is asymmetric between inputs. Our estimates suggest that farm access to credit increases TFP up to 1.9% per 1000 EUR of additional credit. The use of variable inputs and capital investment increases up to 2.3% and 29%, respectively, per 1000 EUR of additional credit. Due to credit-financed investment in labour-saving farm equipment,...

Accounting for water use and productivity AgEcon
Molden, David J..
This paper presents a conceptual framework for water accounting and provides generic terminologies and procedures to describe the status of water resource use and consequences of water resources related actions. The framework applies to water resource use at three levels of analysis: a use level such as an irrigated field or household, a service level such as an irrigation or water supply system, and a water basin level that may include several uses. Water accounting terminology and performance indicators are developed and presented with examples at all the three levels. Concepts and terminologies presented are developed to be supportive in a number of activities including: identification of opportunities for water savings and increasing water...

Adaptability and stability of canola hybrids in different sowing dates Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Lima,Luiz Henrique da Silva; Braccini,Alessandro Lucca; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Piccinin,Gleberson Guillen; Ponce,Raissa Marrafon.
ABSTRACT Canola is an important crop in the world market, mainly for its oil being used for human consumption and biodiesel production, being a great economical option for the farmer, which are the reasons to the increase in its cultivation in Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the adaptability and stability of canola hybrids, depending on the sowing dates. The canola hybrids (Hyola 61, Hyola 76, Hyola 411 and Hyola 433) were evaluated in three sowing dates (04/10, 04/25 and 05/10) in the agricultural years of 2013 and 2014, under a randomized complete block design with five replications. The response variables analyzed were seed yield and oil content. Adaptability and stability of the hybrids were evaluated by three methods: Wricke's ecovalence (1962);...

Aflatoxins and fumonisins in feed from a broiler operation system from São Paulo state, Brazil Ciência Rural
Kobashigawa,Estela; Corassin,Carlos Humberto; Franco,Larissa Tuanny; Uliana,Rômulo Dutra; Oliveira,Carlos Augusto Fernandes de.
ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to assess the occurrence of aflatoxins (AFs) and fumonisins (FBs) in feed ingredients (corn and soybean meal) and finishing feed in a broiler operation system, as well was to evaluate their effect on the productivity of 20 batches of broilers produced and the histology status of broilers’ liver after slaughter. Corn samples presented the highest frequencies of AFs and FBs, at mean levels of 29.1 and 2,100µg/kg, respectively. Soybean samples presented mean levels of 1.5 and 70µg/kg for AFs and FBs, respectively. Batches of broilers receiving feed containing FB levels higher than 1,000µg/kg had lower weight gain and higher mortality rates, while those fed rations with AFs equal or above the limit of quantification...

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY IN RUSSIA AND UKRAINE: BUILDING ON A DECADE OF REFORM AgEcon
Osborne, Stefan; Trueblood, Michael A..
This study examines the impact of agriculture-specific and economywide institutional reform in Russia and Ukraine on the productivity and efficiency of agricultural production. Production in the agricultural sector in Russia and Ukraine has fallen since reforms began in 1992. The decline is to a certain extent an inevitable result of reform as input and output prices realign to world prices. However, some of the decline is due to incomplete agriculture-specific and economywide institutional reform. Russia and Ukraine have the potential to increase grain exports significantly if reforms are implemented: the most likely scenario projects that wheat and barley exports from Russia and Ukraine could double from current projections, reaching 21 million metric...

Agricultural Productivity, Drought, and Economic Growth in Sahel AgEcon
Boubacar, Inoussa.
A standardized precipitation index is used in a regression analysis to quantify the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity in Sahel. I first estimate a Malmquist productivity index and its efficiency and technical change components. I further assess the statistical significance of the indices by estimating some confidence intervals via a bootstrap method. In the second stage of the analysis, I use a Probit model to estimate the extent to which climate variables affect agricultural productivity. It appears that agricultural performance has been disastrous in many Sahelian countries from 1970 to 2000. Using a comparable cross-country measure of drought, I provide evidence that precipitation variability is constraining not only Sahel’s...

Agricultural Productivity Growth in the European Union and Transition Countries AgEcon
Lissitsa, Alexej; Rungsuriyawiboon, Supawat.
Economic reform in the Central and Eastern European countries in the 1980s helped transform the structure and volume of agricultural production, consumption and trade, and resulted in significant agricultural productivity improvements. However, there are large differences among the transition countries in the magnitude and direction of these changes. The main objective of this study is to measure and compare the levels and trends in agricultural productivity in transition countries with those of the European Union (EU) countries making use of the most recent data available from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This study employs a parametric distance function approach to measure Malmquist productivity index as well as the magnitude and...

Agricultural Productivity in the United States AgEcon
Ahearn, Mary Clare; Yee, Jet; Ball, V. Eldon; Nehring, Richard F..
Increased productivity is a key to a healthy and thriving economy. Consequently, the trend in productivity, economywide, is one of the most closely watched of our common economic performance indicators. Agriculture, in particular, has been a very successful sector of the U.S. economy in terms of productivity growth. The U.S. farm sector has provided an abundance of output while using inputs efficiently. Agricultural productivity growth has been an important source of U.S. economic growth throughout the century, but the years since 1940 have seen an even faster growth in agricultural productivity. The annual average increase in productivity from 1948 to 1994 was 1.94 percent. This reflects an annual growth in output of 1.88 percent per year and an actual...

AGRICULTURAL STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT TO GOVERNMENT POLICIES: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE AgEcon
Ahearn, Mary Clare; Yee, Jet; Korb, Penelope J..
Economic theory alone cannot predict the impacts of government payments on farm structure. We estimate a 5-equation model for the 1978-96 period to measure the impacts using state micro and macro data sets. We found that government payments were positively associated with farm size and farm exits, but negatively associated with the extent of consolidation in farm production and the off-farm work of operators.

Agronomic evaluation of 'Bordô' grapevine (Ives) clones Scientia Agricola
Miotto,Lidiane Carla Vilanova; Mota,Renata Vieira da; Souza,Claudia Rita de; França,Danilo Vieira Cardozo; Dias,Frederico Alcântara Novelli; Pimentel,Rodrigo Meirelles de Azevedo; Dal'Osto,Marite Carlin; Regina,Murillo de Albuquerque.
'Bordô' grapevines (Vitis labrusca) have great relevance to viticulture due to the quality they can impart to wines and juices. However, this cultivar has high variation in yield, ranging from 6 to 11 t ha-1. The use of clones with superior genetic potential related to scions currently marketed may increase crop profitability and revitalize its cultivation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomical responses of twelve clones of the Bordô cultivar selected over a period of 15 years according to yield and quality. The vineyard was planted in 2008. Grape plants were grafted onto '1103 Paulsen' rootstock and trained on vertical shoot positioning. The agronomical evaluations, performed in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons, covered the duration of...
